What is the WBCS examination?

The WBCS (West Bengal Civil Service) examination is the most prestigious competitive examination in West Bengal, conducted annually by the West Bengal Public Service Commission. A single examination selects for Deputy Magistrate, WBCS (Executive), Block Development Officer (BDO), Joint BDO, Police DSP, Excise Inspector and other Group A and Group B posts.

Roughly 3 lakh candidates apply each year; ~8,000 clear Prelims, ~2,000 clear Mains, and 800-1,100 are finally selected. The 2026 notification announces 1,123 vacancies.

Eligibility & age limit

Indian citizen, Bachelor's degree from a recognised university. Distinctive WBCS requirement: must be able to read, write and speak Bangla, Nepali, or Santhali (Darjeeling hill candidates may choose Nepali in place of Bangla).

2. Main Examination

6 descriptive papers for Group A & B (8 for Group A optional). Total: 1,600 marks. Includes compulsory language paper, English, GS-1 (Indian history & national movement), GS-2 (Indian geography), Constitution & economy, arithmetic & reasoning, plus 2 optional papers for Group A.

3. Personality Test

200 marks. Final merit = Mains (1,600) + Interview (200) = 1,800 marks.
