Early life: a humble freedom-fighter

Born on 2 October 1904 (same day as Gandhi’s birthday) at Mughalsarai, UP to Sharada Prasad Srivastava (school teacher who died when Shastri was 18 months old) and Ramdulari Devi. Took the surname “Shastri” (scholar) after graduating from Kashi Vidyapeeth in 1925. Jailed 7 times during the freedom struggle (Non-Cooperation 1921, Salt Satyagraha 1930, Individual Satyagraha 1940, Quit India 1942 — total ~9 years).

PM 9 June 1964 - 11 January 1966

Shastri was unanimously chosen Congress Parliamentary Party leader after Nehru’s death — over Morarji Desai — in the Kamaraj-orchestrated transition. He had earlier served as Railway Minister (1952-56), where he resigned taking moral responsibility for the 1956 Ariyalur train accident (Tamil Nadu, 144 killed) — a precedent often quoted.

Legacy & conspiracy

Bharat Ratna 1966 — first posthumous award. Shastri Bhavan (north block annexe) named after him. His Vijay Ghat on the Yamuna is his memorial. 2 October is observed as Shastri Jayanti. His death at Tashkent remains the subject of conspiracy theories (no autopsy; family alleged poisoning); declassification of Soviet records remains incomplete — topic of the 2018 Vivek Agnihotri film The Tashkent Files.
