Early life: socialist firebrand
Born on 17 April 1927 at Ibrahimpatti village, Ballia district, UP to a peasant family. Allahabad University MA Political Science 1950. Joined the Praja Socialist Party 1951; UP PSP General Secretary; merged into Congress 1964. Famous “Young Turks” of Congress 1969 (with Mohan Dharia, Krishna Kant, Ram Dhan, Krishan Kumar) — pushed Indira leftward (bank nationalisation, privy purse abolition).
Rajya Sabha 1962-67; Lok Sabha from 1977 (Ballia — 7 terms). Bharat Yatra 4,260 km on foot Kanyakumari→Rajghat Delhi 1983-84 — epic 6-month padayatra. Janata Party President 1977-88; founded Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) 1990 after splitting from Janata Dal.

Legacy
Chandra Shekhar continued as Ballia MP until his death; total 9 Lok Sabha terms — one of the longest-serving MPs. Wrote columns in Young Indian. Famous for personal honesty — lived in modest Bhondsi village ashram near Gurgaon. Died at AIIMS Delhi on 8 July 2007 aged 80 from cancer of bone marrow. The pledging of gold under his watch is a Class-1 PYQ on 1991 reforms.
