Early life: prince to politician
Born on 25 June 1931 at Allahabad to Raja Bahadur Ram Gopal Singh of Daiya (Manda estate, Allahabad). Pune University BA + Allahabad University LLB. Politically active from 1969 — UP Congress; UP CM 1980-82 under Indira; Union Commerce Minister 1983-84; Union Finance Minister 1984-87 under Rajiv Gandhi.
As FM, V.P. Singh ordered raids on Reliance Industries (under-invoicing imports), ITC, Dhirubhai Ambani — alienating Rajiv. Moved to Defence Minister in 1987 where he discovered the Bofors-HDW kickbacks; was forced out July 1987. Joined Janata Dal as a corruption-cleansing crusader; Bofors became the National Front’s rallying cry.

Indra Sawhney (Mandal) v. Union of India case — SC upheld 27% OBC reservation but imposed 50% cap + excluded creamy layer (Nov 1992 SC verdict). The Mandal moment permanently restructured Indian politics: OBC mobilisation; rise of Lalu Prasad, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Nitish Kumar; BJP’s Hindutva counter via Rath Yatra. V.P. Singh died 27 November 2008 at AIIMS Delhi of cancer + kidney failure aged 77.
