Early life: a Jana Sangh founder

Born on 25 December 1924 at Gwalior, Madhya Bharat to Krishna Bihari Vajpayee (school teacher, poet) and Krishna Devi. Victoria College Gwalior; DAV College Kanpur (MA Political Science 1947 — First Class First). Joined RSS 1939. Co-founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh with Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee in 1951. Lok Sabha from 1957 (Balrampur UP); was MP from 10 different constituencies in his career.

Famous as a parliamentarian-poet — Nehru once said: “This young man will one day become India’s Prime Minister.” Founded BJP with L.K. Advani in 1980 after Janata Party dissolution. Minister of External Affairs in Morarji Govt 1977-79 — first to address the UN GA in Hindi (4 October 1977).

1st stint: 13-day PM (May 1996)

1996 LS: BJP largest with 161 seats (alliance 187). Vajpayee invited by President Shankar Dayal Sharma — sworn in 16 May 1996. Resigned 28 May 1996 before confidence vote, recognising inadequate numbers. 13-day record.

2nd stint 1998-99: Pokhran-II + Kargil

Feb 1998 LS: BJP-led NDA majority. Sworn in 19 March 1998.
