Background: Haipou Jadonang and the Heraka
The Heraka Movement began in the Naga (Rongmei, Liangmai, Zeme) areas of present-day Manipur/Nagaland/Assam under Haipou Jadonang — a revivalist faith that rejected both forced Christianisation and British administration. Jadonang preached “Naga Raj” — a tribal kingdom free of colonial control. The British arrested and hanged him at Imphal in August 1931.
Gaidinliu takes leadership (1931-32)
At 16, Jadonang’s 13-year-old cousin Gaidinliu assumed leadership. She refused to pay taxes to the British, organised guerrilla strikes on Company outposts, and was hailed by Nagas as a spiritual incarnation. The British launched a major operation; she was captured in October 1932 at Polomi village (Manipur).
Jawaharlal Nehru, prison, and post-1947 honours
She was sentenced to life imprisonment and confined in Guwahati, Shillong, Aizawl and Tura jails. In 1937, Jawaharlal Nehru visited her in Shillong Jail and called her “Rani” (queen) of her people. She remained in prison until independence in 1947 — 14 years total. Post-1947 she was awarded the Tamra Patra Freedom Fighter Award (1972), the Padma Bhushan (1972) and the Vivekananda Seva Samman (1983). PM Modi released a centenary commemorative stamp on her 100th birth anniversary in 2015.
