Why this matters now
Rani Durgavati is tested for the Gond confederacy, Mughal expansion under Akbar, and as a celebrated tribal warrior queen. India observed her 500th birth anniversary in 2024 with multiple Government of India events.
Marriage and rule of Gondwana
Born to the Chandel Rajput royal family of Mahoba, Durgavati married Dalpat Shah, son of the Gond king of Garha-Mandla, in 1542. After Dalpat Shah’s death in 1550, she ruled as regent for her infant son Bir Narayan. She built reservoirs, encouraged trade and earned a reputation for justice across the Garha-Mandla, Mahoba, Narsinghpur and Damoh tracts.
Battle of Narrai (1564)
In 1564 Akbar sent his general Asaf Khan (the governor of Kara) to conquer Gondwana. Durgavati personally led the Gond army at the Battle of Narrai near present-day Jabalpur. Despite initial successes — using terrain and elephant charges — she was wounded by arrows. Refusing to be taken prisoner, she used her own dagger to end her life on 24 June 1564. Her son Bir Narayan was killed in the next engagement.
Legacy
Asaf Khan’s forces sacked Gondwana, looting an enormous treasure. Rani Durgavati University at Jabalpur (founded 1956) is named after her; the day of her sacrifice 24 June is observed as Balidan Diwas. India Post issued commemorative stamps; the Government of India celebrated her 500th birth anniversary in 2024 as a national event.
