Why this matters now

J.C. Bose is tested for: priority in wireless (1895 Calcutta Town Hall demonstration), invention of the crescograph and other plant-physiology instruments, founding of the Bose Institute, and the IEEE Milestone recognition (2012) for his early contributions to wireless.

Wireless waves (1895-99) — priority over Marconi

In November 1895 at the Calcutta Town Hall, Bose publicly demonstrated electromagnetic-wave transmission across a distance of 75 feet, ringing a bell and detonating gunpowder remotely. This was 18 months before Marconi’s December 1896 patent. The IEEE awarded the 2012 IEEE Milestone recognising Bose as a pioneer of wireless. He also invented the mercury coherer with telephone detector and refused to patent his work in keeping with the open-science tradition.

Plant physiology and the crescograph

From 1900 Bose turned to plant biology. His instruments showed that plants respond to stimuli with measurable electrical signals — pinching a plant releases a current pulse, plants “sleep”, and plant tissues show fatigue. His invention the crescograph magnified plant growth by 10,000× allowing direct observation of plant movement. He published Response in the Living and Non-Living (1902) and Plant Response as a Means of Physiological Investigation (1906).

Bose Institute, knighthood, Royal Society

Bose was knighted in 1917 and founded the Bose Institute, Kolkata in 1917 — one of India’s oldest research institutions, still operational today as an autonomous body under DST. He became the first Indian scientist elected to the Royal Society of London (1920). The crater Bose on the Moon is named after him.

Frequently asked questions

Did J.C. Bose invent the wireless?

He demonstrated wireless EM-wave transmission in November 1895 in Calcutta, 18 months before Marconi’s December 1896 patent.

What is the crescograph?

An instrument invented by J.C. Bose that magnifies plant growth by 10,000× to allow direct observation of growth and movement.

When was the Bose Institute founded?

30 November 1917 by J.C. Bose — one of India’s oldest research institutions, still functioning under the Department of Science & Technology.

Why didn’t Bose patent his inventions?

He believed in the open-science tradition — that scientific discoveries should be freely available to humanity rather than commercially restricted.
