The 1924 Dhaka paper

Bose was teaching at Dhaka University when, preparing a lecture for his students, he made an error that gave the right answer — Planck’s blackbody-radiation law derived from purely statistical first principles, treating photons as indistinguishable particles. His four-page paper “Planck’s Law and the Light-Quantum Hypothesis” was rejected by the Philosophical Magazine. Undeterred, he sent it directly to Albert Einstein on 4 June 1924.

Einstein not only understood the importance immediately, he translated the paper into German himself and sent it for publication in Zeitschrift für Physik. Einstein then extended the work to material particles (massive bosons) and predicted what we now call the Bose-Einstein condensate — finally observed experimentally in 1995 (rubidium atoms cooled to 170 nK).

The boson — a whole class of particles

Particles obeying Bose-Einstein statistics are called bosons (a term coined by Paul Dirac in 1947 in honour of S.N. Bose). They include the photon (light), gluon (strong-force carrier), W and Z bosons (weak-force carriers), Higgs boson (mass-giving field), and the hypothetical graviton. The 2012 discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN renewed public awareness of Bose’s name.

Career and legacy

Bose was a co-founder of the Department of Physics at Dhaka University. After 1947 he moved to Calcutta University. He was FRS 1958, Padma Vibhushan 1954 and served as National Professor from 1958. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize multiple times but never received it — one of the great oversights in Nobel history. The S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences at Kolkata is named after him. The centenary of his 1924 paper was observed in 2024 across India and CERN.
