Why this matters now
The Rajputs are tested for their origins, the major clans (and their temples — Khajuraho, Dilwara), and why these brave but divided kingdoms fell to the Turks — a recurring GS-1 theme.
Origin and major clans
The origin of the Rajputs is debated (Agnikula myth, foreign descent or indigenous Kshatriya theories). The major clans were the Gurjara-Pratiharas (a tripartite-struggle power), the Chauhans (Chahamanas) of Ajmer/Delhi — whose Prithviraj Chauhan III fought Muhammad Ghori at Tarain — the Paramaras of Malwa (Raja Bhoja), the Chandelas of Bundelkhand and the Solankis (Chalukyas) of Gujarat.
Culture and art
Rajput society prized chivalry, honour and clan loyalty. They were great patrons of temple architecture (Nagara style): the Khajuraho temples (Chandelas, a UNESCO site), the Dilwara Jain temples (Solanki era), the Sun Temple at Modhera, and forts and literature in Apabhramsa/Sanskrit.
Why the Rajputs were defeated
Despite their valour, the Rajputs failed to unite; their mutual rivalries, conservative feudal warfare (rigid formations, war-elephants), defensive outlook and lack of swift cavalry/intelligence left them vulnerable to the more mobile, united Turkish armies — culminating in the loss at the Second Battle of Tarain (1192).
UPSC angle
Know the major Rajput clans (Pratiharas, Chauhans/Prithviraj, Paramaras/Bhoja, Chandelas/Khajuraho, Solankis/Dilwara), the origin theories, Nagara temple art, and the reasons for their defeat (disunity).
