Why this matters now

This is a perennial Prelims topic — distinguishing Nagara, Dravida and Vesara by their towers and layout, and matching famous temples to their style and dynasty. The terminology (shikhara, vimana, gopuram) is frequently tested.

Common elements

Most temples share a core: the garbhagriha (sanctum housing the deity), a mandapa (pillared hall), a tower over the sanctum, and often a circumambulatory path (pradakshina). The differences lie chiefly in the shape of the tower and the overall layout.

The three styles

FeatureNagara (North)Dravida (South)
TowerShikhara — curvilinear, beehive-likeVimana — stepped pyramidal tower over sanctum
GatewayUsually no grand gatewayTowering gopurams on enclosure walls
LayoutOften on a raised platform; panchayatana (5-shrine) planWalled enclosure with a temple tank
ExamplesKhajuraho, Konark Sun Temple, Kandariya MahadevaBrihadeeswarar (Thanjavur, Chola), Meenakshi (Madurai)

The Vesara style of the Deccan is a hybrid that blends Nagara and Dravida elements, seen in the temples of the Chalukyas (Badami, Pattadakal) and the ornate, star-shaped Hoysala temples (Belur, Halebidu).

Patron dynasties

Great temple-builders include the Cholas (the towering Dravida Brihadeeswarar temple — a UNESCO “Great Living Chola Temple”), the Pallavas (Mahabalipuram shore temple, rathas), the Chandelas (Khajuraho), the Eastern Gangas (Konark, Puri), and the Hoysalas (Vesara — recently inscribed by UNESCO).

UPSC angle

Tell the styles apart by the tower (shikhara vs vimana) and gateway (gopuram = Dravida). Match temples to style/dynasty: Khajuraho/Konark = Nagara; Brihadeeswarar = Chola/Dravida; Hoysala = Vesara.
