Outcome: India held more captured territory (~1,920 sq km) than Pakistan (~545 sq km). India had lost 3,000+ killed; Pakistan 3,800+ killed.
Tashkent Declaration 10 Jan 1966
The Tashkent Conference (3-10 January 1966) was mediated by Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin at Tashkent (Uzbekistan, then USSR). PM Lal Bahadur Shastri + Pakistan President Ayub Khan signed the Tashkent Declaration on 10 January 1966:
- Both armies withdraw to positions held before 5 August 1965.
- Restore diplomatic + economic + cultural relations.
- Return prisoners of war.
- Discourage hostile propaganda; commit to non-interference.
- Continued talks on Kashmir.
Shastri died at Tashkent the next morning (11 January 1966) from a heart attack — the only Indian PM to die abroad. Conspiracy theories: no autopsy; family alleged poisoning; subject of The Tashkent Files (Vivek Agnihotri 2018 film). Indira Gandhi succeeded as PM 24 January 1966.
