  • 1947: East Bengal (later East Pakistan) carved out of British Bengal partition. Geographically separated 1600 km from West Pakistan.

  • 1966: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s 6-Point Movement for East Pakistani autonomy.

Simla Agreement 2 July 1972

PM Indira Gandhi + Pakistan President Z.A. Bhutto signed the Simla Agreement at the Mall, Shimla on 2 July 1972:

  1. Resolve disputes through bilateral negotiations only — not third-party (UN) mediation.
  2. Line of Control (LoC) replaced 1949 Karachi Agreement ceasefire line in J&K — respect the line.
  3. Withdraw armed forces to international border.
  4. India returned 93,000 PoWs in stages 1972-74; Pakistan recognized Bangladesh.
  5. Resume diplomatic + commercial ties.

Pakistan recognized Bangladesh on 22 February 1974 at OIC Lahore Summit. Mujibur Rahman returned to Bangladesh January 1972; assassinated 15 August 1975 with most of his family. Indira Gandhi conferred Bharat Ratna 1971 for the war leadership.
