Why this matters now
Meiji is tested for: Commodore Perry’s Black Ships 1853-54 forced Japan open; Tokugawa shogunate’s collapse; Boshin War 1868-69; Emperor Meiji + Charter Oath 1868; abolition of han (feudal domains) 1871; Iwakura Mission 1871-73; Meiji Constitution 1889; defeats of China 1895 (Treaty of Shimonoseki) + Russia 1905 (Treaty of Portsmouth, Theodore Roosevelt mediation, Nobel Peace). Japan’s success inspired Asian nationalism (Rabindranath Tagore visit 1916).
Pre-Meiji Japan
Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1867): founded by Tokugawa Ieyasu after Battle of Sekigahara 1600. 250 years of sakoku (closed country) policy — only Dutch traders at Dejima (Nagasaki), Korea, Ryukyu, China limited contact. Rigid 4-class feudal hierarchy: samurai-farmers-artisans-merchants.
Commodore Matthew Perry’s Black Ships arrived 8 July 1853 at Edo Bay, demanding Japan open to US trade. Return 1854. Treaty of Kanagawa 31 March 1854 — Japan’s 1st unequal treaty. Followed by similar treaties with UK, Russia, Netherlands, France. Anti-foreign “Sonnô Jôi” (revere emperor, expel barbarians) movement emerged.
Tozama daimyo (outer lords) of Satsuma (south Kyushu) + Choshû (western Honshu) + Tosa + Hizen domains led the anti-shogun rebellion. Satsuma-Choshu alliance March 1866.
