First Carnatic War (1746-48)

Parent: War of Austrian Succession (1740-48) in Europe; Anglo-French naval rivalry spread to India.

Indian-origin war over succession disputes (no European parent war).

Succession 1: Nizam of Hyderabad — Nasir Jung vs Muzaffar Jung (Dupleix backed Muzaffar Jung).

Succession 2: Nawab of Arcot — Muhammad Ali (British backed) vs Chanda Sahib (Dupleix backed).

  • British dominance: EIC emerged as the dominant European power; cleared path for British conquest of Bengal at Plassey 1757 + Buxar 1764.
  • Sepoy army: Indian sepoys trained in European tactics; British army doctrine emerged.
  • Subsidiary Alliance roots: Dupleix’s system of installing pro-French puppet rulers (Hyderabad, Carnatic) was later replicated by Wellesley.
  • Pondicherry remained French until 1 Nov 1954 — merged into India by referendum after Indian independence.
