Why this matters now

Panipat’s battles are tested for: location (strategic plain on GT Road); 1st Panipat 1526 (Babur’s 12,000 vs Lodi 100,000; gunpowder + Tulughma + carts’cordon tactics; Ibrahim Lodi killed; founded Mughal Empire); 2nd Panipat 1556 (Akbar 13 years; Bairam Khan regent; Hemu Hemchandra Vikramaditya defeated; consolidated Mughal restoration); 3rd Panipat 1761 (Sadashivrao Bhau + Vishwasrao + Marathas vs Ahmad Shah Abdali + Najib-ud-Daulah Rohilla + Shuja-ud-Daulah Awadh + Doab Afghans; ~60,000-100,000 Marathas killed; Maratha power broken; opened gap for British).

First Battle of Panipat (21 April 1526)

Forces:

  • Babur: ~12,000 troops + matchlocks + cannon. Recently captured Kabul (1504); 5 raids into India 1519-25.
  • Ibrahim Lodi: ~100,000 + 1,000 war elephants. Sultan of Delhi (Lodi Sultanate).

Battle tactics:

  • Babur arranged his army with carts joined by chains (Araba) on the front — protection for matchlocks.
  • Tulughma (Mongol flanking maneuver) + matchlocks + field artillery (Ustad Ali Quli + Mustafa Rumi).
  • Ibrahim Lodi advanced; his elephants panicked from cannon-fire.
  • Babur’s left + right wings turned the Lodi flanks; charged the centre.
  • Battle lasted 6 hours; Ibrahim Lodi killed — ~15,000 Lodi soldiers killed.

Aftermath:

  • Mughal Empire founded; Babur entered Delhi 27 April 1526; Agra 4 May 1526.
  • Babur ruled 1526-30; succeeded by son Humayun.
  • First major use of gunpowder in north Indian battle.
  • Babur described his triumph in Baburnama: “In this short space of one hour I had vanquished such a powerful king.”

Second Battle of Panipat (5 November 1556)

Background: Humayun reclaimed throne 1555 after exile; died from accident 26 Jan 1556 (fell down library stairs). 13-year-old Akbar succeeded.

Hemu (Hemchandra Vikramaditya) — Hindu Vaishya general of Adil Shah Suri (last Suri ruler) — took advantage of Mughal chaos:

  • Captured Agra + Delhi October 1556.
  • Proclaimed himself Vikramaditya at Purana Qila Delhi.
  • 22 victories before Panipat.
  • Army: ~50,000 soldiers + 1,500 war elephants + 500 cannon.

Mughal response: Bairam Khan (Akbar’s regent) decided to face Hemu before consolidation. Akbar + Bairam marched from Punjab.

Battle:

  • Hemu advanced confidently; sent wing forward.
  • Mughal vanguard under Ali Quli Khan + Sikandar Khan engaged.
  • Hemu personally led elephant-mounted charge.
  • Arrow struck Hemu’s eye — Hemu fell unconscious on elephant; Hindu army demoralised; routed.
  • Hemu captured + brought before Akbar + Bairam Khan; beheaded by Bairam Khan (some say Akbar; debated).

Aftermath:

  • Mughal Empire restored; Akbar consolidated.
  • Bairam Khan regent until 1560.
  • Akbar ruled 1556-1605; transformed Mughal Empire.

Third Battle of Panipat (14 January 1761)

Background: Marathas under Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nana Saheb) + son Vishwasrao + cousin Sadashivrao Bhau reached zenith 1758-60. Captured Lahore from Afghans 1758. Triggered Ahmad Shah Abdali’s 5th invasion of India 1759-61.

Abdali’s allies: Najib-ud-Daulah Rohilla + Shuja-ud-Daulah Awadh + Bangash Pathans Doab. Total ~60,000.

Maratha force: ~45,000 fighting troops + ~3 lakh non-combatants (pilgrims + traders + women + children + servants on Bhau’s pilgrimage cum military expedition). Led by Sadashivrao Bhau + Vishwasrao + Ibrahim Khan Gardi (artillery) + Malharrao Holkar.

Battle (14 Jan 1761):

  • Bhau formed wagon-defensive line + cannon — static formation.
  • Afghans had cavalry mobility + zamburaks (camel-mounted swivel guns) + better tactical movement.
  • Battle began ~9 AM; Marathas initially gained ground.
  • Vishwasrao killed by musket ball ~2 PM — demoralisation.
  • Bhau dismounted + charged forward + killed.
  • By 4 PM Marathas collapsed; massive rout.
  • ~60,000-100,000 Marathas killed in battle + retreat. Non-combatants slaughtered or enslaved.

Aftermath:

  • Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao died of shock 23 June 1761.
  • Maratha northward expansion halted.
  • Peshwa Madhavrao (1761-72) revived; recaptured Delhi 1771.
  • But Maratha hegemony permanently weakened.
  • Power vacuum filled by British EIC — capitalized via Plassey-Buxar; consolidated mid-1760s onwards.
  • Mahadji Scindia became dominant Maratha chief; recaptured Mughal Delhi 1771 + Marathas held Shah Alam II 1771-1803.
  • Abdali returned to Afghanistan; ~30,000 Afghan deaths plus disease in monsoon.
  • Total casualties + brutality of 3rd Panipat — the bloodiest battle on Indian soil for centuries (Gupta era to Plassey).
