How CRISPR works

CRISPR-Cas9 is a molecular “cut-and-edit” tool adapted from a bacterial immune system. A guide RNA locates a target DNA sequence, and the Cas9 enzyme cuts it, allowing genes to be disabled, corrected or inserted. It is far cheaper, faster and more precise than earlier methods — its discoverers won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
