Why this matters now
Linguistic diversity is core GS-1 and links to states reorganisation, the Eighth Schedule, the official-language debate and regionalism. The language families and the Schedule are commonly tested.
Language families
India’s languages belong to four main families: Indo-Aryan (the largest — Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, etc., mainly north and central India), Dravidian (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam — south India), Austroasiatic (e.g. Santhali, Mundari) and Tibeto-Burman/Sino-Tibetan (in the north-east and Himalayas).
The Eighth Schedule and classical languages
The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution lists the scheduled languages (currently 22) that enjoy official recognition. Separately, the government confers “classical language” status on languages with an ancient, independent literary tradition (Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia and others).
The official-language question
The Constitution makes Hindi (in Devanagari) the official language of the Union, with English as an associate/additional official language. States have their own official languages. The three-language formula in education seeks a balance — typically the regional language, Hindi and English — though language policy has at times been politically sensitive.
Significance
Language is central to identity, culture and politics in India. It drove the linguistic reorganisation of states, and remains a live issue (Hindi imposition concerns, protection of minor and endangered languages). Managing linguistic diversity is essential to national integration.
