What is Digital India?

Launched in 2015 (Ministry of Electronics & IT), Digital India rests on three vision areas — digital infrastructure as a utility, governance & services on demand, and the digital empowerment of citizens — implemented through nine pillars (broadband highways, universal mobile access, public internet access, e-Governance, e-Kranti, information for all, electronics manufacturing, IT for jobs and early-harvest programmes).

Key initiatives

Flagship outcomes include the India Stack / Digital Public InfrastructureAadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, DBT, the Account Aggregator, ONDC — plus BharatNet (rural broadband), Common Service Centres, UMANG, and PMGDISHA (digital literacy). India’s DPI model is now studied worldwide.

Challenges

Challenges: the digital divide (connectivity, devices, literacy, gender/rural gaps), cybersecurity and data privacy (DPDP Act), digital infrastructure gaps, and ensuring inclusive access so digitalisation does not widen inequality.
