Early life: a peasant ideologue
Born on 23 December 1902 at Noorpur village, Meerut district, UP, to a Jat farming family. MA Agra University 1925; LLB 1926. Practised at Ghaziabad. Joined the Indian National Congress 1929; jailed during Salt Satyagraha 1930 and Quit India 1942. UP Revenue Minister 1952-67; UP Chief Minister twice (April 1967 - Feb 1968 + Feb 1970 - Oct 1970). Founded the Bharatiya Kranti Dal (BKD) in 1967 (later merged into Bharatiya Lok Dal/BLD 1974), the agrarian wing of post-Indira politics.
Author of UP Zamindari Abolition Act 1950 (as Revenue Minister) and UP Land Consolidation Act 1953 — landmark agrarian reforms.
PM 28 July 1979 - 14 January 1980
Charan Singh quit Morarji’s cabinet in July 1979 over Janata Party’s Jana Sangh-RSS dual-membership crisis. President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy invited him to form government with outside support from Congress(I) — Indira’s condition was withdrawal of cases against her. When Charan Singh refused, Indira withdrew support before the scheduled confidence vote of 20 August 1979. Charan Singh resigned 20 August 1979 but continued as caretaker PM until elections. Result: Indira’s Congress(I) returned with 353/542; Charan Singh lost.

Legacy & Bharat Ratna 2024
Founded Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD); UP-based agrarian party. Founder thinker of the kisan andolan framework. His memorial is Kisan Ghat on the Yamuna, Delhi — near Rajghat. 23 December (his birthday) is observed as National Farmers Day (Kisan Diwas). Died 29 May 1987.
The Modi government conferred the Bharat Ratna posthumously on 9 February 2024, along with P.V. Narasimha Rao, M.S. Swaminathan, L.K. Advani and Karpoori Thakur — the largest single-day Bharat Ratna announcement.
