Background: Sonakhan and the 1856 famine
Veer Narayan Singh, of the Binjhwar Gond community, inherited the small Sonakhan estate (~50 villages, in present-day Baloda Bazar district of Chhattisgarh) as zamindar in 1830. When the 1856 famine struck, he raided a grain merchant’s storehouse and distributed the food to starving tribals. He was arrested under EIC orders.
Escape and 1857 rising
In August 1857, with the wider revolt spreading, Veer Narayan Singh escaped from Raipur Jail with help from sympathetic guards and returned to Sonakhan. He raised a tribal force of around 500 Gond fighters, declared independence and attacked the EIC’s tax collectors and treasury. The British, under Captain Smith, surrounded Sonakhan and captured him at Devarghar (December 1857).
Hanged at Jaistambh Chowk (10 Dec 1857)
He was tried summarily and publicly hanged at Jaistambh Chowk, Raipur on 10 December 1857, becoming the first Adivasi hanged in the 1857 Revolt. The Chhattisgarh government observes 10 December as his martyrdom day. A memorial stands at Jaistambh Chowk; Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium at Naya Raipur (also called New Raipur Cricket Stadium) is named after him.
