Background: forest laws and Bhil land
The Indian Forest Act of 1865 (later 1878 and 1927) classified Bhil-cultivated lands of the Nimar tract (Khargone, Khandwa, Burhanpur in present-day MP) as “reserved forest”, criminalising their traditional shifting cultivation. Zamindars and moneylenders extracted compound interest at usurious rates. Bonded labour became routine.
The Robin Hood years (1878-89)
From the late 1870s Tantya Bhil organised armed bands that looted treasuries of British-appointed zamindars and exploitative moneylenders, distributing the proceeds to poor Bhil and Dalit cultivators. For over 11 years he evaded the colonial police across Khandwa, Burhanpur and the Satpura hills. London newspapers including the New York Times covered him as “The Indian Robin Hood”.
Betrayal and hanging (1889)
He was eventually betrayed by an associate, arrested in 1888, and hanged at Jabalpur Central Jail on 4 December 1889. India Post issued a commemorative stamp in 2008 recognising his contribution; 4 December is observed in MP and Maharashtra as Tantya Bhil’s martyrdom day. Indore’s Patalpani railway station is unofficially called Tantya Mama station.
