Why this matters now
Vivekananda is tested on the Ramakrishna Mission, his Chicago Parliament speech, the philosophy of Practical Vedanta and his influence on the freedom movement.
Ramakrishna and the monastic life
Born Narendranath Datta in Calcutta, he became the foremost disciple of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. After his Guru’s passing (1886), he travelled India as a wandering monk — experiencing the suffering of the poor at first hand and shaping his vision of a regenerated nation.
The Chicago Address (1893)
At the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago, 1893, his opening “Sisters and brothers of America…” won a standing ovation. He presented Vedanta as a universal philosophy of tolerance and acceptance, instantly becoming an international figure and putting Hinduism on the modern world stage.
Ramakrishna Mission & Practical Vedanta
In 1897 he founded the Ramakrishna Mission at Belur Math — built on the principle “Atmano Mokshartham Jagad Hitaya Cha” (for one’s liberation and the world’s good). He preached “Practical Vedanta” — service to man as service to God — through education, healthcare and disaster relief. His birth anniversary, 12 January, is observed as National Youth Day.
