The revolutionary phase
Cambridge-educated, Aurobindo entered Bengal’s nationalist politics during the Swadeshi era. He edited the radical paper “Bande Mataram” with fiery anti-British editorials, supported the Anushilan Samiti revolutionary network, and was a leading Extremist at the Surat Split (1907). He was tried (and acquitted) in the Alipore Bomb Case (1908).
Pondicherry and philosophy
After a mystical experience in prison, Aurobindo withdrew from politics in 1910 and settled in Pondicherry, where he developed his spiritual philosophy. He founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram (1926, with The Mother) and wrote “The Life Divine”, “The Synthesis of Yoga” and the epic Savitri. He developed “Integral Yoga” — a synthesis of paths aiming at the evolution of consciousness.
Legacy
Aurobindo is one of India’s most influential 20th-century thinkers, bridging nationalism and spirituality. His Pondicherry ashram and the experimental community Auroville (founded by The Mother, 1968) continue his vision of human unity and conscious evolution.
