Why this matters now
Patel is among the most-tested freedom-struggle figures — Bardoli, the integration of states (his greatest achievement), and his role as first Deputy PM and Home Minister.
Early life and Bardoli Satyagraha
Born in Gujarat, Patel was a barrister who joined the freedom movement under Gandhi. He led successful peasant satyagrahas at Kheda (1918) and the famous Bardoli Satyagraha (1928) — a no-revenue campaign against an unjust tax hike. His leadership earned him the title “Sardar” from the women of Bardoli.
In the freedom struggle
Patel was a senior Congress leader, organising the party machinery and serving as Congress President (1931, Karachi Session). He played a key role in the Civil Disobedience and Quit India movements, suffered repeated imprisonment, and was part of the team that negotiated independence.
Integration of the princely states
As Deputy PM and Home Minister (with V.P. Menon), Patel achieved his greatest feat: peacefully integrating 565 princely states into the Indian Union through the Instrument of Accession and skilful diplomacy. The tougher cases — Junagadh, Hyderabad (Operation Polo) and the J&K accession — were resolved decisively, giving India its present map.
