Prarthana Samaj (1867)

Ranade was a leading light of the Prarthana Samaj founded in Bombay (1867). Inspired by the Brahmo Samaj, it preached monotheism and rational devotion, and campaigned against caste, untouchability, child marriage and gender inequality — while remaining rooted in the Marathi bhakti tradition.

Indian National Social Conference

In 1887 Ranade founded the Indian National Social Conference — held alongside the annual Congress session — to push reform of caste, child marriage and widow remarriage on a national stage. He himself married the young Ramabai Ranade and educated her, modelling reform in his own home.

Economic thought and Deccan Education Society

Ranade pioneered nationalist economics in India — advocating protective tariffs, planned industrialisation and Indian-led modernisation in “Essays on Indian Economics”. He helped found the Deccan Education Society (Pune, 1884) which set up Fergusson College and shaped western India’s educated middle class. Gopal Krishna Gokhale was his most famous disciple.
