Journalism and Khilafat
Azad founded the Urdu weekly “Al-Hilal” (1912) and later “Al-Balagh” to spread nationalism among Muslims. He played a key role in the Khilafat and Non-Cooperation movements (1919-22), bringing Muslim opinion into the nationalist mainstream.
Youngest Congress President
Azad became the youngest Congress President at 35 (1923, Special Session) and again served as Congress President from 1940-46 — through the Quit India Movement, the Cabinet Mission and the freedom negotiations. A staunch opponent of Partition, he documented his account in “India Wins Freedom”.
First Education Minister
As independent India’s first Education Minister (1947-58), Azad founded the UGC, the first IIT (Kharagpur, 1951), AICTE, Sahitya Akademi, Lalit Kala Akademi, Sangeet Natak Akademi, ICCR and IIA. He championed universal primary education. His birthday, 11 November, is observed as National Education Day; the Bharat Ratna was awarded to him posthumously in 1992.
