Banaras Hindu University
Malaviya’s lasting legacy is the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) at Varanasi — founded by the BHU Act, 1915 and opened in 1916. Conceived as a centre integrating traditional Indian and modern Western learning, BHU became one of the largest residential universities in Asia and a centre of nationalist thought.
In the Congress and politics
Malaviya was Congress President four times (1909, 1918, 1932, 1933) — among the Moderates and bridging-figures. He sat in the Imperial Legislative Council, opposed the Rowlatt Act, and chaired the campaign against the Communal Award (1932), helping forge the Poona Pact. He coined the slogan “Satyameva Jayate” (popularly attributed to him).
Journalism and Bharat Ratna
A skilled journalist, Malaviya edited Hindi “Abhyudaya” and the English daily “Leader” (Allahabad), and was associated with The Hindustan Times. He championed Hindi and education reform. He was conferred the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2014 — his birth anniversary (25 December) is observed as Good Governance Day.
