Early life: Indore to Mumbai
Born Hema Hardikar on 28 September 1929 in Indore to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar (Marathi classical singer and theatre owner) and Shevanti. Father’s sudden death from heart disease in 1942 when Lata was just 13 forced her to support five siblings (Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Mangeshkar, Hridaynath Mangeshkar). She began acting in Marathi/Hindi films and singing for them from 1942. Her first national hit was “Aayega Aanewala” from Mahal (1949), composed by Khemchand Prakash for Madhubala.

Member of Rajya Sabha nominated 1999-2005 (Independent — did not draw salary, allowance or housing). She died from COVID-19 complications on 6 February 2022 at Mumbai aged 92. National mourning declared.
