Background: Nizam Forest Department
The Nizam of Hyderabad State’s Forest Department classified large parts of the Adilabad teak belt as “Reserved Forest” in the 1920s. Gonds engaged in podu (shifting) cultivation were forced to pay taxes to outside zamindars (jagirdars) installed by the Nizam, leading to bonded labour and dispossession.
Revolt and the Jodeghat campaign
Komaram Bheem mobilised Gond villagers around Babejhari and Jodeghat in the early 1930s. He demanded a separate “Gond Raj” for the 12 Gond villages and refused to pay forest taxes. His slogan “Jal, Jangal, Zameen” (water, forest, land) — control of natural resources by the tribes themselves — became the rallying cry of generations of Adivasi rights movements that followed.
Killed at Jodeghat (October 1940)
The Nizam’s forces under Talukdar Abdul Sattar launched a final assault. On 27 October 1940 Komaram Bheem and 14 of his comrades were ambushed and killed at Jodeghat village. Telangana state renamed Adilabad district as Komaram Bheem Asifabad in October 2016; the Komaram Bheem Memorial at Jodeghat is a state-protected site.
