Physics: Bhabha scattering and cascade theory
Trained at Cambridge under Paul Dirac (Cavendish Lab), Bhabha did pioneering work in quantum electrodynamics. Bhabha scattering (1935) is the electron-positron elastic scattering process. His cascade theory of electron showers (with Heitler, 1937) explained cosmic-ray showers. He returned to India in 1939 (when WWII broke out during his vacation) and joined IISc Bengaluru.
TIFR (1945) and the three-stage programme
With J.R.D. Tata’s backing, Bhabha founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Bombay on 1 June 1945 — India’s premier institute for basic research. As Nehru’s science adviser, he framed the Atomic Energy Act 1948 creating the AEC, and in 1954 the Department of Atomic Energy.
Bhabha’s three-stage nuclear programme (1958) was designed to use India’s vast thorium reserves (~25% of world’s thorium):
- Stage 1: Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) on natural uranium — produce electricity + Pu-239.
- Stage 2: Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs) on Pu-239 + U-238 — produce more Pu-239 + convert thorium to U-233.
- Stage 3: Thermal Breeders on U-233 + thorium — sustained thorium fuel cycle.
Mont Blanc, 24 January 1966
Bhabha died on 24 January 1966 when Air India Flight 101 (“Kanchenjunga”) crashed on Mont Blanc in the French Alps en route to Geneva. He was 56. The cause is officially a navigation error; some theories (none proven) suggest sabotage. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay was renamed in his honour 12 days after his death by PM Indira Gandhi. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1954.
