Why this matters now
Ambedkar is among the most-tested figures — Mahad Satyagraha, Round Table Conferences, the Poona Pact, his constitutional role and his Buddhist conversion are core for GS-1 (history) and GS-2 (Constitution).
Mahad, Kalaram and the Round Tables
Ambedkar led the Mahad Satyagraha (1927) for Dalits to drink at a public tank, the Kalaram Temple Entry Satyagraha (1930) at Nashik, and was the sole Dalit voice at the three Round Table Conferences (1930-32) in London. He demanded political safeguards for the Depressed Classes.
Poona Pact (1932)
When the British Communal Award (1932) granted separate electorates to Depressed Classes, Gandhi began a fast-unto-death at Yerwada Jail. The resulting Poona Pact (24 Sept 1932) between Ambedkar and Gandhi replaced separate electorates with reserved seats in a joint electorate — the basic template that survives today.
Drafting the Constitution and after
Ambedkar was elected to the Constituent Assembly and made Chairman of the Drafting Committee. He piloted the Constitution through the Assembly (adopted 26 Nov 1949) and is rightly called the “Father of the Indian Constitution”. As independent India’s first Law Minister, he drafted the Hindu Code Bills on inheritance, marriage and divorce — resigning in 1951 when they were watered down.
Buddhist conversion and legacy
On 14 October 1956 at Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur, Ambedkar embraced Navayana Buddhism along with around 500,000 followers — the largest religious conversion in history. He died on 6 December 1956. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1990. His birth anniversary, 14 April, is observed as Ambedkar Jayanti.
