Background: dispossession of Mundas
In the late 19th century, the Munda tribes of Chotanagpur lost their traditional Khuntkatti land system to outside landlords (dikus), Christian missionaries and the forest laws of the colonial state. Bonded labour (begari) and forced eviction were rampant.
Ulgulan and the Birsait faith
Birsa launched a religious reform — the Birsait faith — combining monotheism with Munda traditions, and openly opposed dikus and missionaries. In 1899-1900 he led the Ulgulan (“Great Tumult”) — an armed uprising for “Abua dishum, abua raj” (our country, our rule) — attacking police stations and zamindars. He was captured in early 1900 and died in Ranchi Jail on 9 June 1900 at just 25.
Chotanagpur Tenancy Act and Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas
The revolt forced the colonial state to pass the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act, 1908 — restricting transfer of tribal land to non-tribals (a key Adivasi rights statute that survives). His birth anniversary, 15 November, is observed as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas (instituted 2021) — the same day Jharkhand was created (2000).
