Vande Mataram
Vande Mataram, written around 1875 and woven into Anandamath, personified the motherland and became a rallying cry of the freedom struggle, especially during the Swadeshi movement after the 1905 Partition of Bengal. After independence it was given the status of the National Song (distinct from the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana), honoured equally with it.
UPSC angle
Anchor three facts: author of Vande Mataram; the song appears in Anandamath (1882); Vande Mataram is the National Song (Jana Gana Mana is the National Anthem). Note his role in modern Bengali prose and cultural nationalism.
