Why this matters now

This is a high-yield Prelims topic — distinguishing the CAPFs and their roles, and the intelligence agencies (internal vs external). It underpins all internal-security topics.

Armed forces and CAPFs

The Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force) defend against external threats. For internal security, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), under the MHA, are key:

ForcePrimary role
CRPFInternal security, law & order, anti-Naxal operations
BSFGuarding the Pakistan/Bangladesh borders
CISFSecurity of industrial units, airports, key installations
ITBPIndia-China border (high altitude)
SSBNepal and Bhutan borders

Specialised units

The National Security Guard (NSG) is the elite counter-terror/commando force (“Black Cats”). The Assam Rifles guards the Myanmar border and aids counter-insurgency. Special Protection Group (SPG) protects the PM.

Intelligence agencies

India’s intelligence is split by domain: the Intelligence Bureau (IB) handles internal intelligence; the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) handles external intelligence; the National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigates terror; NATGRID links databases; the NTRO provides technical intelligence; and the Multi-Agency Centre (MAC) coordinates them.

Significance

A clear division of labour — defence (armed forces), internal security (CAPFs), specialised response (NSG) and intelligence (IB/RAW/NIA) — with strong coordination, is essential to meeting complex, interlinked threats.

UPSC angle

Match each CAPF to its role (CRPF-internal/anti-Naxal; BSF-Pak/Bangladesh; CISF-installations; ITBP-China; SSB-Nepal/Bhutan), and IB (internal) vs RAW (external). NSG = counter-terror.
