Why this matters now
Soft power and cultural diplomacy are tested for the concept (Joseph Nye), India’s assets and instruments, and the strategic value — a recurring GS-2 IR theme.
What is soft power?
Soft power (coined by Joseph Nye) is the ability to influence others through attraction and persuasion — via culture, political values and foreign policy — rather than military or economic coercion (hard power). The blend of both is “smart power”.
India’s soft-power assets
- Civilisational heritage — yoga, Ayurveda, philosophy, Buddhism;
- Culture — cinema (Bollywood), music, cuisine, festivals;
- Democracy and pluralism — the “mother of democracy”;
- The diaspora — a vast, influential global community;
- Development & humanitarian diplomacy — Vaccine Maitri, HADR, ITEC.
Instruments and the way forward
Instruments include the ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations), the International Day of Yoga, cultural centres, scholarships, and the promotion of Brand India. The way forward: better coordination, leveraging the diaspora and digital media, and matching soft power with capacity to convert goodwill into influence.
UPSC angle
Know soft power (Nye) vs hard/smart power, India’s assets (yoga, cinema, democracy, diaspora, Vaccine Maitri), instruments (ICCR, Yoga Day), and the way forward (coordination, diaspora).
