Why Central Asia matters

The five Central Asian republics (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan) offer energy and resources (oil, gas, uranium, minerals), a market, and strategic depth in India’s extended neighbourhood. They are also key to managing terrorism, radicalisation and the situation in Afghanistan.

The Connect Central Asia policy

India’s “Connect Central Asia” policy seeks all-round engagement — political, economic, energy, connectivity, capacity-building and cultural. The first India-Central Asia Summit and a dedicated dialogue mechanism have institutionalised ties, with India offering lines of credit and development partnership.

The connectivity challenge

The biggest constraint is the lack of direct land access (Pakistan blocks the overland route). India works around this via the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and Iran’s Chabahar port to reach Central Asia and beyond, and engages through the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

The way forward

India aims to deepen energy, connectivity (INSTC/Chabahar), security and development cooperation, leveraging the SCO and goodwill — while navigating the dominant influence of Russia and China in the region.
