Who publishes it
The SDG India Index is published by NITI Aayog (with the UN in India), the first of its kind to track SDG progress at the sub-national level.
What it measures
It scores each state and UT (0–100) on their progress across the 17 SDGs (using selected indicators), classifying them as Aspirant, Performer, Front-Runner or Achiever. It enables benchmarking, peer learning and data-driven policy.
Significance
By localising the global SDGs, the index promotes competitive and cooperative federalism, helps identify gaps, and steers states toward the 2030 Agenda. India has shown steady improvement in its composite score over successive editions.
