Why this matters now

GPI is a frequent “index-and-publisher” Prelims item and a useful Mains hook on the economic cost of violence. It is released annually (usually mid-year), so always quote the latest edition and India’s position.

Who publishes it

The GPI is produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), an Australia-based think tank, and reported through its Vision of Humanity platform. It covers 163 countries and territories.

The three domains

The index scores each country on 23 indicators grouped into three domains (lower score = more peaceful):

  • Societal safety and security — crime, incarceration, political instability, terrorism impact;
  • Ongoing domestic and international conflict — deaths and intensity of conflicts;
  • Militarisation — military spending, armed-forces personnel, weapons.

India and the global picture

In 2025, Iceland was the most peaceful country, followed by other small European and Asia-Pacific states; conflict-hit countries ranked at the bottom. India ranked around 115 of 163 — an improving-but-mid position, weighed down by regional tensions and internal-security indicators. The IEP also estimates the large economic cost of violence to global GDP. (Update the rank each year.)

UPSC angle

Remember publisher (Institute for Economics and Peace) and the three domains (societal safety; ongoing conflict; militarisation). This is an annual page — refresh India’s rank yearly.
