Why this matters now
The Vedic Age is a prelims-heavy, foundational GS-1 topic — sources (the Vedas), the Early vs Later Vedic contrast, and the roots of caste, religion and kingship are repeatedly tested.
Sources and the four Vedas
Our knowledge comes mainly from the Vedic literature: the four Vedas — Rigveda (hymns, oldest), Samaveda (melodies), Yajurveda (sacrificial formulae) and Atharvaveda (spells/charms) — plus the Brahmanas, Aranyakas and Upanishads. The Rigveda is the chief source for the Early Vedic period.
Early (Rig) Vedic period
In the Early Vedic period (c. 1500–1000 BCE), society was pastoral and tribal — cattle (gau) were the main wealth. The tribe (jana) mattered more than territory; the chief (rajan) was assisted by assemblies (sabha and samiti). Society was relatively egalitarian; varna distinctions were not rigid; women had a fair status. Religion centred on nature gods — Indra, Agni, Varuna — through sacrifice (yajna), not idol worship.
Later Vedic period
In the Later Vedic period (c. 1000–600 BCE), the centre shifted to the Ganga–Yamuna doab; agriculture and iron (krishna ayas) grew. Kingship became larger and territorial (rashtra); rituals like Ashvamedha and Rajasuya enhanced royal power, and the sabha/samiti declined. The varna system hardened into four classes, and sacrifices became elaborate — provoking later reform (the Upanishadic and heterodox movements).
UPSC angle
Know the four Vedas (and their content), Early vs Later Vedic contrasts (pastoral→agrarian, tribe→territory, soft→rigid varna), key gods, and sabha/samiti. The Rigveda is the chief Early-Vedic source.
