Why this matters now

The revolutionaries are examined for their organisations, key figures and actions, and for their evolving ideology (from individual heroism to socialist ideas under Bhagat Singh). They complement the study of the mainstream movement.

The early phase

After the Partition of Bengal, revolutionary societies like the Anushilan Samiti and Jugantar emerged in Bengal, with parallel activity in Maharashtra (the Chapekar brothers earlier; Savarkar’s Abhinav Bharat) and abroad. The Ghadar Party (founded 1913 in the USA by Indian emigrants, including Lala Har Dayal) planned an armed uprising during WWI. The Kakori conspiracy (1925) — a train robbery to fund activities — led to the execution of Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan and others.

The HSRA and Bhagat Singh

The Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), reorganised in 1928, gave revolutionary nationalism a socialist direction. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru shot dead the police officer Saunders (avenging Lala Lajpat Rai’s death). In 1929, Bhagat Singh and B.K. Dutt threw a (deliberately non-lethal) bomb in the Central Legislative Assembly “to make the deaf hear,” and courted arrest to spread their message. Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged in 1931 (Lahore Conspiracy Case). Chandrashekhar Azad died fighting in 1931.

Chittagong and legacy

In 1930, Surya Sen led the daring Chittagong armoury raid, involving young revolutionaries including women like Pritilata Waddedar and Kalpana Datta. Though militarily unsuccessful, the revolutionaries left a powerful legacy: they popularised the idea of fearless sacrifice for the nation, and under Bhagat Singh, broadened the goal from merely expelling the British to building a just, egalitarian society.

UPSC angle

Know the organisations (Anushilan, Ghadar, HSRA), key events (Kakori 1925, Saunders/Assembly bomb 1929, Chittagong 1930), and that Bhagat Singh added a socialist, egalitarian vision.
