Palaeolithic and Mesolithic

The Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age) — hunter-gatherers using rough quartzite tools (hand-axes, cleavers); the Bhimbetka caves preserve rock paintings. The Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) saw microliths (tiny tools), the beginnings of domestication and more rock art.

Neolithic revolution

The Neolithic (New Stone Age) brought the “Neolithic Revolution”agriculture, animal domestication, settled village life, polished stone tools and pottery. Mehrgarh (Balochistan) is among the earliest farming settlements; other sites span Kashmir (Burzahom), the south and the north-east.

Chalcolithic age

The Chalcolithic (Copper-Stone) age marks the first use of metal (copper) alongside stone, with painted pottery and rural farming cultures (e.g. the Ahar, Kayatha, Malwa and Jorwe cultures). This leads into the urban Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilisation.

UPSC angle

Know the sequence — Palaeolithic (quartzite tools, Bhimbetka), Mesolithic (microliths), Neolithic (agriculture, Mehrgarh/Burzahom), Chalcolithic (copper + stone, Jorwe/Malwa) → Indus Valley.
