The road to independence

  • Cabinet Mission (1946) — proposed a loose federal union and a Constituent Assembly; its rejection over grouping deepened the deadlock and the demand for Pakistan;
  • Communal violence (Direct Action Day, 1946) made a united India increasingly untenable;
  • The Mountbatten Plan (3 June 1947) accepted partition and set a swift timetable;
  • The British Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act 1947, creating the two dominions of India and Pakistan from 15 August 1947.

The Partition

The boundary between India and Pakistan was drawn hastily by the Radcliffe Commission (the Radcliffe Line), partitioning Punjab and Bengal. Partition triggered the largest mass migration in history — an estimated 10-15 million people crossed borders — accompanied by horrific communal violence and the death of hundreds of thousands to over a million. Gandhi spent Independence Day in Calcutta working to quell the violence.

Aftermath

India became independent on 15 August 1947, with Jawaharlal Nehru as Prime Minister and the famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech. The new nation immediately faced the challenges of refugee rehabilitation, communal healing, and the integration of over 500 princely states — and went on to frame its Constitution through the Constituent Assembly.
