Why this matters now

The Cauvery is examined both as physical geography (source, course, falls) and as a GS-2 federalism case study — the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal, the 2018 Supreme Court verdict, and the Cauvery Water Management Authority.

Source and course

The Kaveri rises at Talakaveri on the Brahmagiri hills in the Western Ghats (Kodagu, Karnataka). It flows south-east through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, forming a fertile delta before reaching the Bay of Bengal. It supports two famous waterfalls — Shivanasamudra (a hydropower site) and Hogenakkal.

Tributaries and dams

Major tributaries: the Kabini, Bhavani, Amaravati, Hemavati and Shimsha. Key dams: the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) in Karnataka and Mettur in Tamil Nadu.

The Cauvery water dispute

The dispute between upstream Karnataka and downstream Tamil Nadu (also involving Kerala and Puducherry) dates back to colonial-era agreements. A Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal gave its award in 2007; the Supreme Court modified the allocation in its 2018 verdict and directed the creation of the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) to implement sharing. Tensions still flare in deficit-monsoon years.

UPSC angle
