Why this matters now

The types of protected areas and their differences are classic Prelims items, and the Wildlife Protection Act underpins conservation governance. This links to biodiversity and species projects.

The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972

The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 is the backbone of wildlife conservation in India. It provides for the protection of species (through Schedules that grade species by the level of protection), regulates hunting and trade, and establishes protected areas and bodies like the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL).

Types of protected areas

TypeFeatures
National ParkHighest protection; no human activity/grazing/rights allowed; fixed boundaries
Wildlife SanctuaryHigh protection; certain regulated human activities/rights may be allowed
Conservation ReserveBuffer/corridor areas (govt-owned), declared with local-community consultation
Community ReserveCommunity/private land conserved with local participation

Beyond the Act, conservation uses biosphere reserves (UNESCO MAB), tiger reserves (under Project Tiger/NTCA), elephant reserves and internationally recognised Ramsar wetland sites — together forming a layered conservation network.

UPSC angle

Master the protected-area hierarchy: National Park (strictest, no rights) > Wildlife Sanctuary (some regulated rights) and the Conservation/Community Reserve distinction. Wildlife Protection Act 1972 + NBWL.
