Why this matters now

Sustainable development is a cross-cutting GS theme linking environment, economy and society. The Brundtland definition, the three pillars and the SDGs are common exam points and current-affairs anchors.

The concept

The classic definition comes from the Brundtland Report, “Our Common Future” (1987): development that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” It rests on three pillars — economic, social and environmental — which must be balanced.

The Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015 the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets — covering poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, clean water, energy, decent work, climate action, life on land and below water, peace and partnerships. They succeeded the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and apply to all countries.

India and the SDGs

India tracks its progress through NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index, which ranks states and UTs on the goals. Many national programmes (on poverty, sanitation, energy, health and education) map directly onto the SDGs, making India central to global achievement of the 2030 Agenda.

Significance

Sustainable development reframes growth to be inclusive and environmentally sound, integrating climate action and equity. It guides policy toward a green, low-carbon and just transition — reconciling development aspirations with planetary limits.
