India’s rivers are polluted by untreated sewage (the largest source), industrial effluents, agricultural run-off, solid waste and religious/ritual waste, worsened by reduced flows from over-abstraction and dams. Earlier programmes (the Ganga Action Plan) had limited success.
The Namami Gange mission
Namami Gange (launched 2014) is the integrated, flagship mission to clean and rejuvenate the Ganga, implemented by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG). Its pillars: sewage treatment infrastructure, industrial effluent monitoring, riverfront/ghat development, afforestation, biodiversity conservation, ensuring ecological flow (e-flows), and public participation (Ganga Praharis).

Namami Gange marked a shift to a river-basin, integrated approach and was recognised as a top global ecosystem-restoration initiative. Challenges remain: sewage treatment gaps, industrial compliance, sustaining e-flows, tributary pollution and behaviour change — lessons now extended to other rivers.
