Why this matters now
NAPCC and its eight missions are a prelims staple, and the framework links to India’s NDCs, net-zero pledge and state action plans — core climate-governance content.
What is NAPCC?
Launched in 2008, the NAPCC outlines India’s strategy to address climate change through eight national missions, balancing development with sustainability. States prepare State Action Plans on Climate Change (SAPCCs) in line with it.
The eight national missions
- National Solar Mission (solar energy);
- National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency;
- National Mission on Sustainable Habitat;
- National Water Mission;
- National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem;
- National Mission for a Green India (afforestation);
- National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture;
- National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change.
NDCs and the way forward
NAPCC underpins India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement — including targets on emissions intensity, non-fossil capacity (500 GW by 2030) and a carbon sink — and the goal of net-zero by 2070 and the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) movement.
