Why this matters now
Biosphere reserves test the difference between various protected-area categories (national park vs sanctuary vs biosphere reserve) and the core-buffer-transition idea of balancing conservation with community livelihoods — a recurring GS-3 theme.
The MAB concept
Biosphere reserves are designated under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme (1971). They aim to reconcile conservation with development, serving three functions — conservation, sustainable development, and logistic support (research, education, monitoring).
The three zones
- Core zone — legally protected and inviolate; no human activity (often a national park/sanctuary within it);
- Buffer zone — surrounds the core; allows research, education and limited, regulated use;
- Transition zone — the outermost area where communities live and pursue sustainable economic activity in partnership with managers.
India’s biosphere reserves
India has 18 biosphere reserves. The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (1986) was the first. Others include Nanda Devi, Sundarbans, Gulf of Mannar, the Nicobar Islands (Great Nicobar), Manas, Simlipal, Pachmarhi, Achanakmar-Amarkantak, Seshachalam, Panna and more. Several Indian reserves are part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (e.g., Nilgiri, Nanda Devi, Sundarbans, Gulf of Mannar, Nokrek, Pachmarhi, Simlipal, Great Nicobar, Achanakmar-Amarkantak, Agasthyamalai, Khangchendzonga, Panna).
UPSC angle
Remember the three zones (core inviolate, buffer regulated, transition for communities), the MAB programme, and that the Nilgiri (1986) was India’s first biosphere reserve.

How many biosphere reserves does India have?
18, of which several are part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Which was India’s first biosphere reserve?
The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, designated in 1986.
What are the three zones of a biosphere reserve?
The core (inviolate, strictly protected), the buffer (regulated use and research), and the transition zone (sustainable community activity).
