Who was Major Dhyan Chand?
Major Dhyan Chand Singh (29 August 1905 - 3 December 1979) was an Indian field hockey player widely considered the greatest player in the history of the sport. He was renowned for his extraordinary goal-scoring ability and dribbling skills earning him the nicknames "The Wizard" and "The Magician of Hockey".

National Sports Day — declaration
The Government of India officially declared 29 August as National Sports Day in 2012 to honour Major Dhyan Chand's birth anniversary and promote sports culture in India. Since then, every year on this day, the President of India confers the National Sports Awards at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
